The Benefits of Adopting

 

 

              At the Humane Society of El Paso located at 4991 Fred Wilson Avenue, El Paso Texas 79906, we adopted Arlo Nikola Tesla in 2020. He was a two-year-old puppy that was going to be put down at the no-kill shelter. COVID had started and my partner and I decided to adopt a dog. I had recently moved from Los Angeles, and I wasn’t sure if moving to a small city or the lockdown due to COVID was what made the transition so hard. My partner suggested we get a puppy, so the search started.

              My partner had looked up photos of over 400 dogs at the shelter to find a dog like a photo I had saved in 2019. During COVID, the shelter was only open to people with appointments, you were not allowed to walk around, and you would have to notify the staff about the animal you would like to see, and they would bring it out. We arrived and we were not allowed to see the dog, they said that he was going to be put down instead. We left and later that week we decided to email them asking if there was a way, we could meet the dog.

              One week passed and we got a call from the shelter. We were asked to come to pick up the dog, he was just neutered. This was the first time we heard from him since the last visit. We rushed over before they changed their mind.

              We saw Arlo for the first time. He was so tiny and looked scared. We were told that he had had a rough start in life. He was abused and did not trust people. We brought him home; we did not make eye contact with him the entire time. The animal shelter staff informed us that making eye contact with an insecure dog will make things worse. We left the door open to his cage. He finally came out; since then, all three of us have been inseparable.

             Arlo has brought happiness, emotional support, entertainment, love, and an abundance of

 funny stories to tell. He is always there, happy, looking to give and receive love. He now has high self-

esteem and walks with an attitude. We started a YouTube channel with Arlo to bring happiness and

 positivity to people. He is now three, enjoying his fabulous life, and still likes to hang out with my

 partner and I. He has positively changed my life by bringing purpose to it.
